How Nepal's Postal Code System Works
In 2025, Nepal replaced its 1991-era 5-digit postal codes with a new federal-structure system aligned with the country's provinces, districts, and local levels. Each local level (municipality or rural municipality) has its own 5-digit postal code. Ward-level addresses use a 7-digit code — the local level's postal code followed by a two-digit ward number (for example, ward 1 of a local level with postal code 20315 uses 2031501).
Some older forms and directories still reference the pre-2025 legacy 5-digit codes. Where a local level's legacy code is known, its page notes both the old and current code.
